The Government has announced a significant investment in the future of Wellington Girls' College, confirming $100 million in funding to support the school's long-term property redevelopment. This initiative aims to provide safe, warm, and modern learning environments that will ensure the college continues to deliver world-class education for generations to come.
"Cabinet has approved funding for the next stage of the school's redevelopment. It will deliver state-of-the-art facilities that uphold our commitment to quality education," said Education Minister Erica Stanford.
Key Developments in the Next Stage Include:
- Construction of a new two-storey building that will house replacement classrooms and administration/resource spaces.
- A brand-new school hall to replace the existing facility.
- Earthquake strengthening works on the historic Brook Block to ensure the building's resilience.
- Relocation of modular classrooms from the school field and repositioning of two-storey modular units to their permanent locations, creating additional classroom space.
- Reinstatement and enhancement of the school field to support outdoor activities.
- Removal of outdated prefabricated classrooms that have reached the end of their lifecycle.
This next phase builds on previous investments that included the delivery of one and two-storey modular classrooms, earthquake strengthening of the Pipitea Block, and the construction of covered courts. The new two-storey building and relocated modular units will provide around 20 new classrooms.
"This Government is focused on developing efficient and sustainable solutions for school property management. We expect the Ministry of Education to prioritize modular, repeatable building designs and maintain transparent communication with schools throughout the planning and construction process," Ms. Stanford added.
The two-storey modular classrooms delivered ahead of Term 1 serve as a model of innovation and efficiency. "These classrooms showcase what we can achieve when we focus on speed, innovation, and collaboration with the market. I expect to see similar approaches implemented across New Zealand," she said.
Timeline of Works:
- 2025 (Mid-Year): Completion of strengthening works on the Pipitea Block.
- End of 2025: Earthquake strengthening on the Brook Block and other redevelopment works to commence.
- 2026: Construction of the new two-storey building and replacement hall to begin.
"Improving education infrastructure is critical to laying the foundation for future success. This Government is dedicated to ensuring New Zealand's students have access to the best possible learning environments," concluded Ms. Stanford.
