Crackdown on Illegal Schools in Thane: Over 19,000 Students Affected

A survey by Thane's civic body revealed at least 81 illegal schools operating in unauthorized or rented buildings with over 19,000 students. The municipal corporation filed complaints, leading to FIRs against 68 schools and a fine of Rs 52 crore. Affected students are being relocated to authorized schools.

A survey conducted by the Thane municipal corporation has unveiled that 81 schools are illegally operating out of unauthorized or rented premises in residential complexes, affecting the education of over 19,000 students.

The ensuing investigation led to the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) against 68 of these unapproved educational institutions. The authorities imposed a hefty fine of Rs 52 crore on these facilities as per the Right to Education Act.

Numerous illegal schools, predominantly located in the Diva ward committee area, are facing the severing of essential services, with 32 already losing water connections. Meanwhile, the Encroachment Department plans further actions in accordance with urban development regulations. The TMC plans to move affected students to certified schools to curb the disruption caused by these revelations.
