Rising Antisemitism Sparks Inquiries Across Australia
Australia has started public hearings into the December Bondi Beach mass shooting, as Jewish Australians testify about increasing domestic antisemitism. The attack, which occurred at a Hanukkah celebration, resulted in 15 deaths. The inquiry aims to understand the prevalence of antisemitism and propose measures against such hatred.
Australia commenced a crucial inquiry into the Bondi Beach mass shooting this Monday, as Jewish Australians recounted the intensified antisemitism they face. The tragic event during a Hanukkah celebration, which claimed 15 lives, has sparked renewed calls for stricter gun laws and robust action against anti-Jewish sentiments.
Virginia Bell, a retired judge leading the National Royal Commission, highlighted that the rise in antisemitism parallels trends in other Western nations due to Middle Eastern conflicts. Witnesses at the inquiry, including the Jewish community, emphasized their growing insecurity amidst the surge of hostility post-Gaza war in October 2023.
The interim report from the commission has already issued 14 recommendations, calling for enhanced security at Jewish events and comprehensive counter-terrorism measures. A second phase of hearings will delve into the specifics of the Bondi Beach attack, with a final report expected by December 14, marking one year since the incident.
