The government of West Bengal has issued a directive requiring all state-run and aided schools to include the singing of 'Vande Mataram' in their morning assemblies. This mandate comes in response to a national initiative promoting respect for national symbols.
Heads of these educational institutions have been instructed to ensure that students comply with this directive. The government intends for the song, penned by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, to be performed daily at the beginning of the assembly and to be documented appropriately.
This move raises logistical questions within schools regarding the limited time available for assembly activities. Historically, West Bengal schools have sung 'Jana Gana Mana' and more recently introduced 'Banglar Mati Banglar Jol'. The addition of 'Vande Mataram' has sparked discussions among educators concerning the integration of these songs into the school's morning routines.
