India Blocks Telegram Amid Exam Cheating Scandal
India has temporarily blocked the Telegram app following allegations of its use in defrauding candidates during the medical entrance exam NEET. The government issued the restriction under IT law to protect sovereignty and integrity. A rescheduled exam is set for June 21, 2026.
India has decided to block the Telegram messaging app, citing its use in fraud related to the NEET medical entrance examination. The Ministry of Education announced this action on Tuesday, emphasizing the platform's misuse by cheating networks to deceive exam candidates.
The restriction on Telegram is temporary and falls under a strict provision of the IT law, meant to uphold the "sovereignty and integrity of India." This decision follows the cancellation of last month's NEET exam after leaked questions were discovered.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has rescheduled the entrance exam for June 21, 2026. Authorities have implemented rigorous measures for the upcoming retest to ensure fairness. Telegram has yet to comment on these developments.
