Tension gripped Panjab University on Tuesday after a Left-leaning student's body drew caricatures of Hindu deities with derogatory comments, triggering a fight with ABVP members who opposed the sketches. The university security personnel intervened to bring the situation under control after the fight between Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Students For Society (SFS) members.

Demanding action against SFS, ABVP and Students Organisation of India members staged a protest outside the law department of the university here, officials said. Led by ABVP president Kuldeep Panghal, the protesters alleged that SFS members drew two caricatures of Hindu deities on the walls of the law department with derogatory remarks.

The protesters sought a ban on SFS and a strict action against it. Panghal said SFS members have hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community.

But SFS leader Harman claimed they were protesting against rising incidents of rape and opposing injustice against women. SFS, a Left-leaning student body, was founded in Sept 2010 at the university. The Panjab University Campus Students Council is headed by it with Kanupriya as its president.

Law department chairperson Meenu Paul said the university will not allow anyone to disturb peace and harmony on the campus. The university's chief security officer Ashwini Kaul said the controversial posters have been removed by SFS. University authorities are taking legal opinion to take further action, he added.
