India's Cannes Dilemma: Independent Filmmakers Shine Amidst Lack of Support

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap criticizes India's lack of support for independent cinema despite recent wins at the Cannes Film Festival. He argues that the victory of filmmakers such as Payal Kapadia and Anasuya Sengupta should be their own and not credited to India. The Indian film industry remains focused on blockbusters rather than supporting diverse voices.

In a strong critique, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has highlighted India's lack of support for independent cinema, despite notable wins at the Cannes Film Festival. Kashyap insists that achievements by filmmakers like Payal Kapadia and Anasuya Sengupta should solely credit the individuals, not the nation.

Kashyap pointed out that Kapadia's film, 'All We Imagine As Light,' was funded by a French company, illustrating India's disinterest in nurturing award-winning cinema. Similarly, other recognized films were either co-productions or received international funding, rather than Indian support.

'The Indian film industry is too focused on producing blockbusters, neglecting the diverse and meaningful cinema often celebrated at festivals like Cannes,' Kashyap stated. This criticism extends to the lack of marketing and support for smaller, critically acclaimed films, which struggle to compete with major releases.
