Legendary Coach TK Chathunni Passes Away at 75

Former Kerala footballer and renowned coach, TK Chathunni, passed away at 75 in Kochi. Known for his stellar defensive skills in the 1960s-70s, Chathunni also represented India in the 1973 Merdeka Tournament. He transitioned into coaching, where he unearthed talents like IM Vijayan and helped Mohun Bagan win their maiden national league title in 1997-98.

Former Kerala footballer TK Chathunni, who made a name for himself as a renowned coach, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 75 in Kochi, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced. Chathunni, recognized for his defensive prowess during the 1960s and 1970s, also represented India in the 1973 Merdeka Tournament in Kuala Lumpur.

He played six international matches for India and featured for clubs like EME Centre (Secunderabad), Vasco Club (Goa), and Orkay Mills (Mumbai). He also represented Services in the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy.

Chathunni's coaching career was illustrious, credited for discovering talents such as IM Vijayan, Bruno Coutinho, and Jo Paul Anchery. He guided Mohun Bagan to their maiden national league title in the 1997-98 season and holds the distinction of coaching the highest number of clubs in India, including FC Kochin, Salgaocar FC, Dempo Sports Club, and Churchill Brothers.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey described Chathunni as a 'dependable defender and top-class coach', while AIFF acting Secretary General M Satyanarayan said, 'His death has created a void in Indian football.' Chathunni is survived by his wife and two daughters.
