Okonjo-Iweala's current term ends in August 2025, and the African group believes it is in the organization's best interest to begin the reappointment process early. The recommendation was formally presented by Chad, emphasizing the need for her continued leadership.

As the WTO's first African and female chief, her tenure has been historic and closely watched. However, she has yet to publicly state her plans for a potential second term.
