Bastille Day Parade Shines with Olympic Flame in Paris

Paris celebrated Bastille Day with an extraordinary twist this year. The Olympic flame joined the grand military parade just days before the city hosts the Summer Games. The parade featured thousands of military personnel, spectacular aerial displays, and a symbolic re-enactment of D-Day landings. Due to Olympic preparations, the event saw changes in its traditional route and fireworks display locations.

Paris celebrated Bastille Day with an extraordinary twist this year. The Olympic flame illuminated the city's grand military parade just 12 days before France hosts the ambitious Summer Games. Thousands of soldiers, sailors, rescuers, and medics took part, marching beneath roaring fighter jets as the Olympic torch relay joined them.

Traditionally, Bastille Day celebrations feature concerts, parties, and fireworks to commemorate the storming of the Bastille fortress on July 14, 1789 — an event that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. This year's parade highlighted those who freed France from Nazi occupation 80 years ago, with a homage to the D-Day landings, and presentations by service members from 31 countries, many of which were former French colonies in Africa.

This year's event was scaled back due to the Olympics, with 130,000 police deployed for security. President Emmanuel Macron reviewed the troops and used the occasion to address the political turmoil within France, as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine, emphasizing that France will continue to support Ukraine and increase defense spending.

The parade's route was altered due to Olympic venue construction around iconic Paris landmarks, and the traditional fireworks display couldn't take place beneath the Eiffel Tower. Instead, the parade concluded at the Bois de Boulogne park. The Olympic torch relay brought additional excitement, passing by key Parisian landmarks before continuing its journey.
