Kedarnath Priests vs. Temple Replica: A Cultural Controversy

Kedarnath priests have temporarily put on hold their protest against the construction of a Kedarnath temple replica in Delhi after receiving assurances from Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The priests object to the commercial use of Kedarnath's name and may take legal action if their concerns aren't addressed.

Kedarnath priests have decided to temporarily halt their protest against the construction of a Delhi-based replica of the renowned Himalayan temple. This decision follows assurances from Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Vinod Tiwari and Umesh Posti from the Kedar Sabha said the decision to pause the agitation came after a meeting between their president Rajkumar Tiwari and Chief Minister Dhami, where a positive assurance was provided.

Posti explained that while the agitation is paused, it is not withdrawn, pending the president's return from Dehradun. He added that if the trust responsible for the replica in Burari remains unwilling to change its name or design, legal actions might be taken.

Surinder Rautela, head of the trust in charge of the Delhi temple, clarified in a press conference that the structure is merely named Kedarnath to promote Uttarakhand's culture and is not intended as an exact replica of Kedarnath Dham.

The priests remain unsatisfied, asserting that both the temple and the trust should not use the name Kedarnath for commercial gains. Concerns also include the collection of donations using Kedarnath Dham Trust's name via a QR code.

Chief Minister Dhami reiterated that Kedarnath Dham's sanctity is tied to its original location between the Mandakini and Saraswati rivers in Uttarakhand. He added that while new temples can be built, Kedarnath Dham's historical and cultural significance must be preserved.

Reacting to the controversy, Dhami criticized Congress for amplifying the issue, saying they are exaggerating a non-issue. Meanwhile, Congress leaders Karan Mahara and Ganesh Godiyal vowed to oppose the construction of the temple replica in Dehli.
