Yamagarni village in Nipani taluk of Belagavi district recently witnessed an unusual celebration. A jubilant crowd paraded a black indie dog named Maharaj, draped in garlands, and held a feast in its honor.
Maharaj, well past his prime, was lost during a pilgrimage trip to Pandharpur in South Maharashtra. Defying the odds, the dog traveled nearly 250 km on its own to return to its village in Belagavi, North Karnataka.
Owner Kamalesh Kumbhar, a ‘Warkari’, visits Pandharpur annually. This year, Maharaj accompanied him. After a darshan at Vithoba temple, the dog went missing. Despite an exhaustive search, Maharaj was not found. Surprisingly, the dog returned home the next day, sparking widespread joy in the village. Villagers believe divine intervention guided the dog back.
