Deng Yawen of China captured the gold medal in the women's freestyle BMX event at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday. Five-time world champion Hannah Roberts of the United States crashed out of both her runs and failed to secure a podium finish.

Scoring 92.60 points, Deng dominated at the urban sports park at Place de La Concorde. Perris Benegas of the US rose from her fourth-place finish in Tokyo to claim the silver medal with 90.70 points, while Natalya Diehm of Australia took home the bronze with a score of 88.80 points.

Roberts, who won silver in Tokyo, may have been affected by a practice crash. Her first run was clean until a hard fall attempting a late front flip, while her second run ended abruptly after she landed improperly, putting an end to her medal hopes.
