Amidst a surge in accidents caused by stray cattle, the Pramod Sawant-led Goa government is promoting the establishment of Gaushalas, or cow shelters, by NGOs.
Pramod Sawant informed the Goa legislative assembly that 25% of the 365 annual road accident deaths in the state are due to stray cattle.
The government's Stray Cattle Management Scheme encourages the creation of Gaushalas, initiated by late Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The scheme funds Gaushalas at Rs 150 per animal per day and provides financial help for constructing shelters and procuring vehicles to transport injured cattle.
