Dutch Volleyball Player Eliminated Amid Controversy

Steven van de Velde, the Dutch beach volleyball player who was convicted of raping a 12-year-old British girl in 2016, was eliminated from the Paris Olympics when he and his partner Matthew Immers lost to Brazil in straight sets.

In his fourth and final match, Van de Velde was repeatedly hooted and whistled at by the crowd each time he served. At match point, with Van de Velde serving and the crowd jeering, Evandro landed the winning spike to secure a 21-16, 21-16 victory, ending the Dutch team's Olympic run.

Post-match, the teammates embraced, exchanged handshakes with opponents and officials, then sat briefly together on the bench. Van de Velde waved to the crowd, acknowledging Dutch fans despite the boos. Immers said they fought hard and enjoyed the experience, even though Van de Velde opted not to speak to reporters for mental rest.

Immers reflected on their emotional journey, expressing pride and satisfaction with their teamwork and resilience. Van de Velde, who served 13 months in prison for his conviction, faced calls for an Olympic ban but still competed after qualifying. The Dutch team concluded with a 1-2 record, advancing on a tiebreaker before falling to the undefeated Brazilian duo Evandro and Arthur.
