Champion's Battle Beyond the Ring: Imane Khelif's Fight Against Online Harassment
Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif has filed a legal complaint in France for online harassment, citing a misogynist, racist, and sexist campaign against her. Khelif, an Algerian gold medallist, faced false claims about her sex. The International Olympic Committee defended her, denouncing misinformation and flawed sex tests in women's sports.
Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif has taken legal action in France against online harassment following widespread criticism and false accusations about her sex during the Paris Olympics, her lawyer reported on Sunday.
Khelif secured a gold medal on Friday in the women's welterweight division, elevating her status as a national hero in Algeria and drawing global attention to women's boxing.
The legal complaint was lodged on Friday with a special unit within the Paris prosecutor's office targeting online hate speech. It alleges 'aggravated cyber-harassment' directed at Khelif, according to her lawyer, Nabil Boudi. The statement described the incidents as part of a 'misogynist, racist and sexist campaign' against her.
Prosecutors must now decide whether to initiate an investigation. Under French law, such complaints typically do not name specific perpetrators, leaving authorities to identify those responsible.
Khelif became embroiled in a broader global debate on gender identity and regulations in sports after her first match when Italian opponent Angela Carini withdrew just seconds into the bout, citing pain from initial punches.
False allegations that Khelif was transgender or male surfaced online, prompting the International Olympic Committee to defend her and condemn the spread of misinformation. Khelif expressed that such misconceptions 'harm human dignity.' Last year, the International Boxing Association disqualified Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting from the world championships, claiming they failed unspecified eligibility tests for women's competition.
The IOC criticized these sex tests as 'irretrievably flawed' and has supported both fighters since the outset of the Paris Games.
Experts argue that the scrutiny faced by Khelif and Lin illustrates the disproportionate examination and discrimination aimed at female athletes of colour concerning sex testing and false claims about their gender.
