Farmers in Punjab and Haryana marked Independence Day by organizing tractor marches to push the Centre for a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.
These protests, orchestrated by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), also involved a 'Delhi Chalo' march beginning February 13 that was met with police barricades. The standoff has resulted in ongoing sit-ins at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points.
Highlighting dissatisfaction with government policies, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher led one of the marches, which ended with demonstrators burning copies of newly enacted criminal laws. Leaders vowed to continue their protests until their demands are addressed, planning large gatherings to mark milestones in their fight.
