Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi, who initially saw sports as a more stable career option, reflects on his journey from aspiring cricketer to chess icon. The 29-year-old from Nashik is set to compete for Mumba Masters in the Global Chess League's second season in London.
Gujrathi's chess career began inadvertently when, at six, he switched from cricket to chess on a local club's advice. His motivation partly stemmed from witnessing his parents' demanding careers as doctors. 'It was a complete accident but a happy one,' says Gujrathi.
Despite misjudging the volatility of a sports career, Gujrathi has thrived, becoming the fourth Indian to surpass a 2700 Elo rating. Returning as a key player for Mumba Masters, he aims for the trophy while prioritizing team camaraderie.
