Kerala-born Jinson Charls, who emerged victorious by defeating a sitting Labour minister in Australia's Northern Territory (NT) elections, is set to become the new minister for disability, arts, veterans, and multicultural affairs. This development was reported by media on Monday, marking a significant milestone in NT's political landscape.
Charls was among two India-born politicians elected to the regional assembly last month, alongside Khoda Patel of Gujarat descent. The Country Liberal Party (CLP) enjoyed a landslide victory on August 24, winning 17 out of 25 seats in the Legislative Assembly.
Charls, with a background as a registered nurse and in health leadership roles, will also oversee youth, seniors, equality, and culture portfolios. His appointment symbolizes historic representation in the NT parliament for politicians of South Asian and South-East Asian heritage.
