Mithun Spotted in Assam, Expanding Biodiversity

For the first time, Mithun (Bos Frontalis), a bovine species native to the Himalayan foothills, has been spotted in Assam. The discovery was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who praised the state's forest department. The species, already present in states like Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, now opens new avenues for local farmers.

For the first time, the Mithun (Bos Frontalis) has been spotted in Assam, adding to the state's biodiversity. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the finding on Tuesday.

The Mithun, the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, is also found in Manipur and Mizoram. The species was recorded in Assam's Dima Hasao district by veterinary experts.

Over 200 Mithuns were spotted in Laisong, Langting, and Thaijuwari, areas inhabited by Zeme Nagas. The presence of these animals offers new agricultural opportunities, despite challenges like disease vulnerability.
