Mohammed Sufiyan, a native of Telangana, has finally returned home after being deceived into joining the Russian army as a support staff member. Sufiyan, who hails from Narayanpet district, arrived back in India on September 14, bringing relief to his anxious family.
Sufiyan's ordeal began when he was promised a security-related job but found himself assisting the Russian military in its conflict with Ukraine. The 22-year-old was further told he would undergo three months of training, after which his salary would increase.
In July, Sufiyan's brother Salman expressed hopes for his safe return following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia. The Indian government had urged Russia to ensure the timely release of Indian nationals employed as support staff, a request that was addressed during PM Modi's discussions with President Vladimir Putin.
