Dramatic scenes unfolded at the Ernakulam town hall, where the mortal remains of CPI(M) leader M M Lawrence were kept for public homage. His daughter, Asha, protested against the decision to hand over his body to the Government Medical College Hospital.

Following Asha's plea, the Kerala High Court directed the Kalamassery Medical College authorities to hear the objections and to take a decision in accordance with the Kerala Anatomy Act. The college was also instructed to temporarily preserve the body in the mortuary.

Asha's petition claimed that her father was baptized and argued that her siblings, along with the Communist party, were attempting to portray him as an atheist. However, CPI(M) clarified that the decision was a family matter and not influenced by the party. Lawrence's son stated that the decision aligned with his father's last wishes.
