The Calcutta High Court on Monday gave the green light for a rally organized by the Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD) to protest the rape and murder of a trainee medic at RG Kar hospital. The event is slated to take place on October 1 in Kolkata.
Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, while disposing of JPD's petition, directed that the rally be conducted peacefully between 5 pm and 8 pm, covering the route from College Square in the north to Rabindra Sadan in the south.
Despite the police authorities' plea for reducing the number of participants and the length of the route, no such restrictions were ordered. The court directed the Kolkata Police, under the joint commissioner's supervision, to arrange adequate security personnel to ensure a peaceful rally. The organizers are to provide a sufficient number of volunteers to maintain order among the supporters.
The medics' platform, an umbrella organization comprising the Association of Health Service Doctors, West Bengal, had requested permission for the rally, expecting about 50,000 participants.
The protest follows the discovery of the postgraduate trainee's body with severe injuries in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
