Boosting British Cinema: UK's New Tax Relief for Films

British Culture Minister Lisa Nandy introduced a tax relief package designed to invigorate the UK's film and creative industries. The Independent Film Tax Credit aims to enhance financial support for productions with budgets up to GBP 23.5 million, promoting cultural and economic growth within the sector.

The UK government's latest tax relief package promises to bolster the nation's film industry by offering the Independent Film Tax Credit (IFTC), Culture Minister Lisa Nandy announced on Wednesday. Productions with budgets up to GBP 15 million can now receive a 53% relief on qualifying expenses.

Nandy emphasized the economic and cultural benefits, noting the UK's independent filmmakers' reputation for producing cult classics. The tax package, aligning with the BFI London Film Festival, aims to support growth, inspire future talent, and maintain the industry’s global stature.

The scheme applies to projects commencing principal photography from April 1, and the BFI certification unit will begin processing applications from October 30. This move is part of a broader strategy to revitalize UK films, especially those emerging from the pandemic and industry setbacks.
