From Show Ring to Comfort Corps: Therapy Dogs on Dual Duties in Times of Crisis

Ziggy, a four-year-old Borzoi therapy dog, is moving from the dog-show circuits of New York City to provide comfort in Los Angeles, following the destructive California wildfires. Fresh from securing a merit award at the Westminster Dog Show, Ziggy's owner, Randi Chylinski, expressed her commitment to offering emotional support to wildfire victims and emergency responders through collaborations with the Red Cross and Therapy Dogs International.

Ziggy, seasoned in therapy work in Detroit, is set to support communities in Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, and Altadena, all severely affected by recent fires that claimed 29 lives and razed over 16,000 structures. With her expertise in drawing smiles and offering solace, Chylinski anticipates profound connections to those in distress. Ziggy's efforts are set to highlight the importance of canine therapy in healing and recovery post-disaster.

In a similar vein, Prosper, a Biewer Terrier, illustrates the dual roles dogs can play. Rescued from the war-stricken Ukraine, Prosper has recently graced Westminster's 'green carpet.' Trained alongside a Russian teammate, Peadora, Prosper also engages in pet fashion events, raising funds for animal rescues, showcasing the multifaceted contributions of show dogs beyond competition walls.
