Kashmir's Handicraft Export Soars: A Cultural Renaissance

Kashmir has exported Rs 2,567 crore worth of handicraft and handloom products over the last two fiscal years. This is projected to reach Rs 3,000 crore by March 2025. Despite challenges from global conflicts, the region continues to promote its artisans with subsidies, model designs, and training programs.

Kashmir's renowned handicraft and handloom sector has witnessed significant growth, with exports reaching Rs 2,567 crore over the past two fiscal years. Officials anticipate this figure will rise to Rs 3,000 crore by March 2025, despite the current global conflicts impacting this year's trade.

Notable items such as Kani and Sozni shawls and hand-knotted carpets have been key contributors to this success, accounting for Rs 1,105 crore and Rs 728 crore, respectively. The state's handicrafts department is providing incentives, including subsidies of up to Rs 5 crore, to foster international exports.

Efforts to preserve and enhance the authenticity of these crafts include a focus on training female artisans, setting up modern equipment for quality testing, and providing free advanced steel carpet looms. A series of schemes support artisans financially, ensuring sustainability and growth of this cultural heritage.
