The controversy unfolded at the 98th All India Marathi Literary Meet in Delhi, where Gorhe's comments attracted criticism, including from Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut. He called for an explanation from the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal on allowing political commentary at such cultural forums.

In response to the uproar, Fadnavis advised literary figures to refrain from political remarks during such events, emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach. Thackeray ridiculed Gorhe’s claims, challenging them with a demand to see the alleged Mercedes cars.
