Staff Shortage Challenges at ASI: A Deep Dive

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is grappling with a substantial staffing shortfall, with only 4,845 employees in position against a sanctioned strength of 8,755, announced Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Monday in the Lok Sabha.

This disclosure came in response to a question from AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, highlighting concerns about manpower shortages across the Ministry of Culture's various departments and bodies. The current total number of employees under the ministry stands at 8,760, against a sanctioned tally of 15,276.

Efforts to bridge this manpower gap include promotion, deputation, and direct recruitment. Vacancies falling under direct recruitment are reported to UPSC and SSC for timely filling. Shekhawat emphasized ongoing inspections and conservation plans for monument preservation in compliance with the 1958 Act.
