Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a surge in tourism, with over 2.35 crore tourists visiting the region in 2024, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced. This growth, from 2.11 crore the previous year, underscores the government's focus on enhancing and promoting religious and tourism sites in Srinagar.
Abdullah, who also handles the tourism portfolio, addressed the assembly during the budget session, emphasizing the sector's pivotal role in the economy. Tourism not only boosts the gross state domestic product but also provides employment opportunities across various demographics, from hotel staff to local vendors.
The administration is expanding its focus to include diverse tourism segments such as adventure, MICE, and eco-tourism to attract a varied visitor base. Infrastructure projects are also a priority, with efforts to develop under-visited locales like Gurez and Keran, ensuring sustainable growth in the tourism sector.
