Surekha Punekar, a renowned Lavni dance performer, has made a plea to the Maharashtra government to prohibit DJ music systems in cultural venues. Punekar argues that these systems encourage inappropriate dance styles, undermining traditional artists' ability to earn a living.
During a media conference, Punekar showcased videos allegedly shot at Lavni kala kendras, highlighting what she considers to be the detrimental impact of DJ systems. She has written to the state Cultural Affairs Minister, Ashish Shelar, advocating for immediate action.
Punekar proposes that only traditional instruments like harmoniums and tablas, along with affiliated artists, should be permitted to perform. Furthermore, she calls for the establishment of a dedicated committee to secure fair wages and insurance for artists performing in these cultural centers.
