Marathi Language: Maharashtra's Linguistic Heartbeat

The Nationalist Congress Party assures that the Marathi language's status remains intact despite concerns over Hindi's imposition. Amid opposition claims, the state government clarified that Hindi is optional in schools, with the requirement for 20 students per grade to choose another Indian language.

In light of the ongoing debate about the perceived 'imposition' of Hindi in Maharashtra, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday reassured residents that the government would not support any measures that undermine the status of Marathi. The party emphasized that Marathi remains the cultural core of the state.

During a press briefing, NCP spokesperson Anand Paranjpe highlighted the government's commitment to maintaining Marathi's significance, noting that the language earned classical status under Prime Minister Modi's governance. He affirmed that the Mahayuti government, a coalition including the NCP and led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, is dedicated to safeguarding Marathi's status.

Last week's government notification, which orders Hindi as an optional third language from grades 1 to 5, has sparked controversy. With mandatory backing from at least 20 students per grade to opt for alternatives, the opposition accused the government of defaulting Hindi as the third language, promising to resist this alleged imposition.
