Sherlock Season 5 likely not to be released before 2021, Mark Gatiss hints storyline

Sherlock Season 5 is a highly anticipated television series but its production is yet to be confirmed. It has been over two years since Season 4 ended followed by a couple of times hints from Hartswood Films that the series would be back with Season 5.

The returning of Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock Season 5 is virtually confirmed as he already talked to the media and expressed his interest to play the role of Sherlock Holmes again in the fifth season. Even series co-creator Steven Moffat earlier said to BBC Radio 2 that he was very optimistic of a fifth season at some point of time in future despite everybody’s busy schedules.

Recent updates on the making of Sherlock Season 5 state that both the creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are currently busy in the making of new series Dracula. According to Moffat, since the Dracula project has already been commenced, it is very tough for the team to work for Sherlock simultaneously. Even Gattis earlier said that if the series comes back on television, it would take at least another four years since the completion of Season 4. If this is to take it positively, then the fifth season can’t be expected before 2021. This is because Season 4 ended in January 2017.

Steven Moffat shared his thoughts over Facebook last year how he saw the series. “Dr Watson is now Doyle’s brave widower and Sherlock Holmes has become the wise and humane version of the main run of the stories,” he gave a hint on the first four series as Chapter One.

On the other hand, BBC also needs to take the initiative in renewing the show so that everyone involved in the production can start taking preparation. From that perspective, we are yet to get any confirmation.

As far as the returning of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in Sherlock Season 5 is concerned, we are sure that the Thor: Ragnarok actor will be coming back to play the role of Sherlock Holmes. But the returning of Black Panther actor Martin Freeman to play Dr. John Watson isn’t confirmed. If he backs out, the character will surely remain in the plot but the actor would be replaced. EconoTimes revealed that Mark Gatiss will surely come back to play the role of Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes.
