ISKCON Faces Tradition Clash Over Global Rath Yatra Dates

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee (SJTMC) are at odds over the global scheduling of the Rath Yatra. While SJTMC insists on observing dates prescribed by sacred scriptures, ISKCON faces logistical challenges, advocating for adjusted dates outside India.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee (SJTMC) are embroiled in a scheduling conflict regarding the global observance of Rath Yatra. The SJTMC, headed by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, insists on adherence to traditional dates as set by sacred scriptures.

ISKCON, however, faces considerable logistical challenges in organizing the Rath Yatra globally on these prescribed dates. According to ISKCON's GBC chairman Govardhan Das, obtaining permissions and volunteer availability on weekdays, especially in Western countries, poses significant obstacles, leading to the decision of holding these festivals on weekends.

Deb has communicated his concerns to ISKCON, emphasizing the precedence of other religious festivals being celebrated on their specific tithis worldwide. Despite these objections, ISKCON stands firm on its decision, citing practical difficulties that hinder adherence to traditional dates outside India.
