Lakhs of devotees gathered at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground for a monumental Bhagavad Gita recital, event organizers reported. Participants included monks in saffron robes and attendees from across West Bengal and neighboring states, all reciting shlokas from the sacred text in unison.
This massive spiritual gathering, dubbed 'Panch Lakkho Konthe Gita Path,' was organized by Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad, a collective of spiritual leaders from various Hindu institutions. Prominent figures such as Swami Pradiptananda Maharaj and BJP leaders like Sukanta Majumdar were in attendance, underscoring the event's mix of religious and political significance.
Organizers emphasized the event's aim to highlight West Bengal's spiritual heritage and promote unity. As the largest collective Gita recital attempted in the state, it served as a counterbalance in a divided political climate, occurring just days after the foundation-laying of a 'Babri Masjid-style' mosque in Murshidabad by a suspended TMC MLA.
