Controversy has emerged as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiatives to redevelop Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi. Kharge accused Modi of attempting to erase historical heritage for personal gain, as ancient structures are demolished under the guise of modernization.
The redevelopment has drawn significant protest, particularly over claims that sacred idols and shrines have been damaged during the process. However, the district administration has refuted these allegations, stating that artefacts are being preserved and will be returned to their original locations once work concludes.
Authorities have defended the redevelopment as a necessary step for sanitary improvements and better space management at the ghat, which is renowned for its cultural and spiritual significance. Meanwhile, Kharge questions whether the project serves broader business interests and accuses the BJP government of eroding cultural identities.
