Hundreds of villagers from Chhattisgarh's Surguja division raised their voices on Friday against forced mining operations, particularly in the ecologically sensitive Hasdeo Arand area. Participants alleged the government's neglect of tribal rights in favor of corporate profits.
A sizable public meeting took place at the BTI ground in Ambikapur, after which protestors marched to the Collectorate to present a memorandum containing a 13-point charter of demands. Addressed to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the document was submitted to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).
Led by organizations such as the Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan (CBA), protestors demanded an immediate stop to several projects, including Kente Extension coal mining, claiming they would lead to deforestation and human-wildlife conflict. In the memorandum, they sought the cancellation of forest and environmental clearances and highlighted ongoing environmental issues.
