On January 18, the coastal town of Udupi will come alive with the Paryaya Mahotsava, a biennial event marking the ceremonial handover of control of the revered Sri Krishna Temple to Shiroor Matha. The transfer is a significant ritual in Udupi's rich tradition.

Sri Vedavardhana Tirtha Swamiji is set to assume the role of pontiff-administrator from 2026 to 2028. Attendees will include religious figures and leaders such as Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. This year, over two lakh devotees are expected, with large-scale 'annadana' or free meal offerings planned for tens of thousands of attendees.

The Paryaya system was introduced by the 13th-century philosopher-saint Sri Madhwacharya, ensuring each of the eight Ashta Mathas governs the temple for two years. The event will begin with a sacred dip and a vibrant procession, highlighting Udupi's status as a Vaishnavite hub for worship and learning.
