In a significant step towards women's empowerment, the Arunachal Pradesh government hosted a marathon in the state capital on Saturday, ahead of International Women's Day. Called 'Empowering Women: Arunachal Marathon,' the event was organized by the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department, drawing large participation from women across all age groups.
Participants competed in two categories—a 10-km competitive race and a 5-km fun run—catering to various fitness levels. WCD commissioner Nyali Ete and director Chadan Tangjang were also present, emphasizing the importance of women's leadership in all fields. 'Whether on the track or in the workforce, we aim for women to lead,' said Ete.
The marathon was a precursor to the International Women's Day celebrations, which include a cyclothon. The event spotlighted Mission Shakti, a key initiative for women's safety and empowerment. According to Bahi Koyu, the state nodal officer for Mission Shakti, the WCD Department is enhancing its support systems for women in distress using 'one-stop centres.'
