In a fervent appeal to the defence ministry, BJP MLA Dilip Rawat has called for the cancellation of the proposal to rename the historic cantonment town of Lansdowne as 'Jaswant Garh'. Rawat argues that the name change would tarnish the town's prestigious reputation as an international tourist hotspot and adversely affect the local economy.

Writing to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Rawat expressed that the ongoing process is 'extremely regrettable,' noting Lansdowne’s significance on the global tourism map and its economic importance to the Pauri Garhwal district. He emphasized that local residents oppose any alteration to the town's name.

With a proposal triggered by Central directives and public notifications issued for feedback, the debate intensifies amid broader discussions about replacing colonial-era names. Rawat criticized the logic of name changes when infrastructure issues persist, highlighting the town's historical ties with the Indian Army. He vowed to join public protests if local sentiments are ignored.
