Honoring a Legend: Padma Vibhushan for Wrestling Icon Khashaba Jadhav?

The Maharashtra government has proposed that the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, be conferred posthumously to Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav. Jadhav, a celebrated wrestler from Maharashtra, earned the distinction of being India’s first individual Olympic medalist after clinching bronze at the 1952 Helsinki Games.

The Bombay High Court is currently examining the proposal, which was prompted by a Public Interest Litigation from the 'Kusteeveer Khashaba Jadhav Foundation'. This foundation, established by Jadhav’s son Ranjeet, seeks to gain the recognition they believe is long overdue for the late sports icon.

As the case proceeds, the state promises a fresh nomination for the 2027 Padma Awards by the stipulated deadline. The courts will continue hearings on the case, with the next session set for June 30. The move hopes to address the longstanding appeals from Jadhav's family for recognition of his sports accomplishments.
