FIFA's Broadcaster Blitz: Chinese TV Rights Locked In at Bargain Rate
FIFA finalized a TV rights deal with China Media Group for World Cup broadcasts, securing coverage through 2031 at a lower price. Despite the agreement covering four tournaments, including the 2026 and 2030 events, the deal marks a significant climb-down from FIFA’s original asking price of $300 million.
In a significant development, FIFA has secured a World Cup broadcast rights agreement with China Media Group just 27 days before the tournament kicks off. The deal encompasses the next four World Cups, extending through 2031, but was settled at a notably lower price than what FIFA initially requested.
The agreement includes the 2026 tournament, valued at $60 million, as per Chinese media reports. This figure contrasts sharply with FIFA's original sought-after sum of $300 million. The finalized deal highlights the challenges FIFA faced, particularly with the time zone differences impacting the tournament's viewership potential in China.
Despite these challenges, Chinese companies remain significant investors in the World Cup, contributing to FIFA's expected earnings of over $11 billion for the 2026 event. Notable Chinese sponsors include technology giant Lenovo, dairy firm Mengniu, and electronics manufacturer Hisense.
