In a significant cultural repatriation event, the Netherlands returned 11th-century Chola dynasty copper plates to India on Saturday, an event overseen by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This gesture underscores the strengthening relations between the two nations.
The copper plates, known as the Anaimangalam Copper Plates, were returned after years of diplomatic efforts by India. Prime Minister Modi expressed pride in the homecoming of these historical artefacts, which detail the heritage of the Chola dynasty, known for its cultural and maritime prowess.
Weighing approximately 30 kg, the plates are considered crucial relics of Tamil heritage outside of India. They were brought to the Netherlands in the 1700s by Florentius Camper and formally returned during the Prime Minister's visit, marking a significant step in reclaiming India's cultural heritage.
