Happy Birthday, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar!!! Google today, on August 27, dedicates a fascinating doodle to celebrate the life and work of the famous Columbian artist who is also highly remembered in Latin America. He is considered one of the most notable sculptors of his country.
Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar was born on August 27, 1923 in Pamplona. The youngest of 11 brothers, he was the son of a jeweler artist who studied architecture and later successfully achieved global acclaims for his paintings and sculptures. He was compelled to move to Cúcuta, capital of the department of Norte de Santander after he went bankrupt.
Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar abstract painting was the necessary preamble of his sculptor work. During the 1950s, he exposed to international modernism on trips to Paris and New York. One of his pieces, The Black and White Painting, was acquired by New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1956, and two years later he won a Guggenheim award.
He made several reliefs between 1959 and 1964. The reliefs of 1962 were dedicated by the artist to pre-Columbian goldsmithing, in which he showed his talent to learn plenty of things about the design, organization of surfaces and contrasts between flat and other elaborate planes of pre-Hispanic works. He made other sculptures exempt from the poet Eduardo Cote between 1964 and 1966.
He became a pioneer of abstract art after returning to his nation. He conducted exhibition at the National Library of Bogotá in 1952 brought him severe fame for representing one of the first samples of abstract painting. His legacy is still alive in the Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar Museum of Modern Art in his hometown. The national and foreigners, mainly art lovers are fond of much of his artistic works that are kept in a large colonial house in the central square of Pamplona.
Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar received several accolades and distinctions like Guggenheim Prize for Colombia, Boyacá Cross, the Francisco de Miranda Order (by the government of Venezuela) to name a few. He died on August 23, 2004 at the age of 81 in Bogotá. Google today honors the great Columbian sculptor and painter on his 97th birthday.
