Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang underwent surgery on his left wrist Friday, the team announced.

Kang began experiencing pain in the wrist on June 20 and spent time resting the injury. But he again felt soreness while taking batting practice on Tuesday, leading to the removal of cartilage during surgery.

Kang hasn't played in the majors since 2016 after being arrested on a DUI charge in his native South Korea for the third time. He received a suspended eight-month prison sentence in March 2017 for leaving the scene of an accident in Seoul on Dec. 2, 2016.

He played in nine games for Triple-A Indianapolis and seven for Class A Bradenton this season before being shut down.

The Pirates hold a $5.5 million team option with a $250,000 buyout on Kang for next season.
