Following the demise of former PM and BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has declared a public holiday on August 17. During this period all schools, colleges, and government offices will remain closed, as a mark of respect to the Bharat Ratna recipient and former PM.

Mr. Vajpayee died at the age of 93, at AIIMS in Delhi on 5:05 pm Thursday evening. His death was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital where he was admitted June 11 with a variety of ailments.

Moreover, several other states including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Bihar Jharkhand, Haryana, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka has also declared a public holiday on August 17.
