Mets activate Bruce from DL

The New York Mets activated outfielder Jay Bruce on Friday prior to the opener of a three-game series against the Washington Nationals.

Bruce has been on the disabled list since June 19 because of a right hip injury. He also has been treated for plantar fasciitis in his left foot and for lower back spasms during the stint on the DL.

New York also recalled catcher Thomas Nido from Double-A Binghamton and optioned first baseman Dominic Smith and outfielder Jack Reinheimer to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Bruce, 31, is batting just .212 with three homers and 17 RBIs this season. The production is a sharp decline from a year ago when he belted a career-best 36 homers to go along with 101 RBIs while splitting the season between the Mets and Cleveland Indians.

The three-time All-Star is scheduled to start in right field Friday but Mets manager Mickey Callaway is interested in seeing Bruce play first base down the stretch as that could be his full-time position next season.

"I definitely think that's a possibility," Callaway told reporters on Friday. "I think that's one of the things we need to find out in this last part of the season."

Nido is batting .159 with no homers and three RBIs in 21 games for the Mets this season.

Smith was hitting .195 with two homers and three in 31 games with New York but also struck out 27 times in 77 at-bats.

Reinheimer was 4-for-14 in five games with New York.
