The Milwaukee Brewers swung three separate deals on Friday to reinforce their roster for a postseason push.
The Brewers acquired outfielder Curtis Granderson from the Toronto Blue Jays just ahead of midnight ET to cap a day in which they added left-hander Gio Gonzalez from the Washington Nationals and southpaw reliever Xavier Cedeno from the Chicago White Sox.
Friday is the deadline for teams to add players to their 40-man rosters and have them be postseason-eligible.
With a 4-1 win over the Nationals on Friday, the Brewers (76-60) moved to within four games of the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs. Milwaukee is currently in possession of one of the two NL wild cards and could claim the top spot if the St. Louis Cardinals lose to the Cincinnati Reds later Friday.
Gonzalez didn't have far to go with the Brewers in Washington for a three-game series this weekend. The Nationals received two minor-leaguers, catcher/first baseman KJ Harrison and infielder Gilbert Lara, in the deal.
Gonzalez, 32, has mostly struggled this season, going 7-11 with a 4.57 ERA in 27 starts. He was 1-4 with a 7.47 ERA in August and has had little success in his career at Miller Park (6.75 ERA in five starts).
Gonzalez was 15-9 with a 2.96 ERA in 32 starts last season.
Gonzalez also enjoyed great success in 2012, when he went 21-8 with a 2.89 ERA and finished third in the NL Cy Young Award voting. The two-time All-Star has a 3.71 ERA for his 11-year major league career spent with the Nationals (2012-18) and Oakland Athletics (2008-11).
The southpaw has roughly $2 million still due on his $12 million salaries this season, the final year of a five-year, $42 million contract.
Harrison, 22, was hitting .228 with 12 homers and 51 RBIs in 115 games for low Class-A Wisconsin this season. Lara was part of the same Wisconsin club, and he batted .249 with five homers and 46 RBIs in 115 games.
Granderson, 37, was acquired from the Blue Jays in exchange for minor league outfielder Demi Orimoloye. Granderson is hitting .245 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs this season.
Granderson, a three-time All-Star, is a career .252 hitter with 330 home runs and 900 RBIs and will serve as a backup behind Ryan Braun, Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich in the outfield.
Orimoloye, 21, was hitting .248 with 12 homers, 55 RBIs and 22 steals in 126 games between Wisconsin and high Class-A Carolina.
The White Sox received outfielder Bryan Connell and right-hander Johan Dominguez in return for the 32-year-old Cedeno, who is 2-0 with one save and a 2.84 ERA in 33 appearances this season.
Cedeno is 10-7 with a 3.81 ERA in 234 career relief appearances with the Houston Astros, Nationals, Tampa Bay Rays and White Sox.
Connell, 19, batted .239 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 48 games across two levels of the Milwaukee farm system this season.
Dominguez, 22, is 3-0 with two saves and a 0.82 ERA in 23 relief appearances at three different minor league destinations in 2018.
Both Granderson and Cedeno are free agents after the conclusion of their respective one-year deals at the end of the season.
