The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has extinguished 90 per cent of the fire that razed at Ghazipur landfill since Sunday evening, said MCD in a statement. Around 40-50 small isolated flames remain in the 3,000 square metre area at the place of the fire. MCD ensured that the fire did not spread beyond this area, added the statement.

It is hoped that the fire will be extinguished completely in the night today. Men and machinery are continuously working in this direction. MCD adopted a two-pronged approach to extinguish the fire- use of inert and C&D waste to choke the fire, and pressing into fire tenders to douse the flames to simmer. Around 600 MT of inert and C&D waste was used to extinguish the fire. 16 excavators, 2 bull-dozers and 6 fire tenders were pressed into service to stamp out the fire. Sprinklers are continually working to ensure that no dust or ash spread in the neighbourhood, added the MCD statement further.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Minister Atishi said on Monday that an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the Ghazipur landfill fire incident. She added that the fire has been controlled now. "The fire tenders of Delhi Fire Service were present at the spot throughout the night. The fire has been controlled. We hope that the smoke will also fade away in some time," Atishi said in a press conference here. (ANI)
