Tragedy in Uttarakhand: Pilgrims Stranded, Two Lost Amid Rising River Waters

Recent heavy rains have caused significant flooding in Haridwar and Dehradun, prompting warnings from local authorities.

In a tragic turn of events, around 30-40 pilgrims found themselves stranded and two were washed away after a temporary bridge collapsed near Gangotri on the Gomukh footpath in Uttarakhand. The disaster, which occurred on Friday due to a sudden surge in river water levels at Devgad, prompted swift action from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Upon receiving the distress call, the SDRF team rushed to the scene, successfully aiding the stranded pilgrims to cross the tumultuous river safely. The SDRF reported that sixteen pilgrims were saved, and efforts continue to rescue the remaining individuals trapped by the rapidly rising waters.

On Thursday, the SDRF had also conducted another rescue operation, saving 10 youngsters stranded on an island near Robbers Cave in Dehradun. In this daring rescue, the SDRF team, led by sub-inspector Laxmi Rawat, battled strong river currents using ropes to reach and secure the trapped individuals.

Heavy rains have battered the region recently, with Haridwar experiencing severe flooding due to the swollen Ganga River. The continuous downpours led to vehicles floating away and roads immersing underwater, prompting authorities to warn residents and visitors to steer clear of the river's hazardous conditions.

Local officials have continuously cautioned against entering the river, highlighting the grave risks posed by the intensified water flow. The SDRF's prompt response and ongoing rescue efforts underscore the dire situation and the need for vigilant weather and safety alerts in the region.
