Shivraj Singh Chouhan Applauds Increase in Pulses Cultivation Area

During the meeting, the Minister was briefed on various aspects, including the onset of the monsoon, groundwater situation, and the availability of seeds and fertilizers.

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, expressed his satisfaction with the significant increase in pulses cultivation during this year's Kharif sowing season. While reviewing the progress of Kharif crops at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi, the Minister noted that the area under pulses, particularly Tur/Arhar, has expanded by over fifty percent.

Shri Chouhan emphasized that achieving self-sufficiency in pulse production is a national priority and urged for continued efforts towards this goal. He reiterated the Centre's commitment to ensuring 100 percent procurement of Urad, Arhar, and Masur pulses in all states. He also stressed the importance of generating awareness to encourage more farmers to engage in pulse cultivation.

Shri Chouhan highlighted the necessity of timely fertilizer availability for both Kharif and Rabi crops and advised the Department of Fertilizer to ensure the supply of DAP fertilizers as per state demands.

The review meeting was attended by Shri Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, along with senior officials from the Ministry, the Indian Meteorological Department, the Central Water Commission, and the Department of Fertilizers.
